Effects of Different Growing Media on the Growth Characteristics of Datça Palm (Phoenix theophrasti-Phoenix theophrasti subsp. golkoy) Seedlings

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of different cultivation environments on the growth characteristics of Phoenix theophrasti taxa. For this purpose, seeds of P. theophrasti, which grows naturally within the boundaries of Karaöz, Kumluca District, Antalya Province, and P. theophrasti subsp. golkoy, which grows naturally within the boundaries of Göltürkbükü Municipality, Bodrum District, Muğla Province, were planted in pots containing three different growing media. In the experiment, three different growing media were prepared by mixing peat (T), perlite (P), loamy soil (TT), sand (K), and burnt farmyard manure (YÇG) in different proportions. During the experiment, the number of plant leaves, leaf length, and leaf width were measured to evaluate the development in different growing media. A limited and fixed fertilization program was used during the study. The results showed significant differences in growth characteristics in terms of both taxon and growing medium. The best results in terms of growth characteristics were observed in the TT+YÇG+K growing medium. In addition, it was determined that P. theophrasti (Karaöz/Kumluca) had significantly higher values in terms of growth characteristics.
