Three-Dimensional Concrete Printing Technology and Bridge Applications: A Critical Review
Abstract
This study examines the contributions of three-dimensional (3D) concrete printing technology to architectural practice and evaluates its potential use in bridge construction. Drawing on the existing literature, the advantages and limitations of 3D concrete printing relative to conventional construction methods; particularly in terms of speed, labour requirements, and material efficiency are discussed. Ten bridge structures built with 3D concrete printing between 2017 and 2025 are analysed in terms of equipment, reinforcement strategy, structural span, cross-section geometry, concrete type, and production method. Through paired comparisons of formally and methodologically related bridges, the study traces the year-by-year development of robotic and additive production. The findings highlight the technological advantages, current limitations, and future development opportunities of 3D concrete printing in pedestrian and bicycle bridge infrastructure, offering guidance for integrating this innovative method into architectural technology and education. Keywords
